Story

Long before the game begins, a run of natural disasters pushed the world toward a global famine. Humanity evacuated into space, and the Pokémon left behind were sealed into specially modified PC Boxes so they would survive the wait.

You wake up as a Ditto in the Withered Wastelands — the ruins of Fuchsia City. Professor Tangrowth, the last Pokémon still awake in the area, explains the rule that drives the whole game: when a habitat is restored well enough, the storage system automatically releases the Pokémon that belongs there. Restore the land, and life comes back on its own.

From there the story moves area by area: lighting up a beach that never sees the sun, throwing a party loud enough to shake a mountain town, rebuilding a skyscraper in a chain of floating islands, and — with the Expansion Pass — diving into a Cerulean City that now sits on the seabed. Scattered through it all are Human Records: notes, newspapers and journals left behind by the people who evacuated, which slowly fill in what actually happened.
